Learning Canadian History

I have taken other history courses other than Canadian History in the past; mostly history courses relating to art such as: Art history 1 and 2, and a history to photography course. So, this was my first Canadian history course.

When going into Intro to Canadian History with Tracy P. Light as an instructor, I was pretty excited to learn about Canadian history. I was mostly excited because maybe for once I could partake or contribute to the historic talks/conversations  my father and 2 of my sibling get into when they’re together.

While I did learn a lot about Pre-confederate Canada during this course, the amount of readings this course required for our reading logs and the course load I had from my other courses, I don’t feel I was able to retain as much of the information as I would have if the  Canadian history course was a bit more demanding in relation to what we learned, other than a reading log. I wish there was some aspect to the course where I was tested on what I had learned. Because then I may retain some of the information i learned.

I treated the reading log just like any other assignment and tried to get it done as quick as possible. But, while the text book had a lot of valuable information in regards to Canada, I feel like I disregarded most of what I had read from the textbook when I was reading and doing the reading logs.

I suppose I have very mixed feelings in regards to this course over the fall semester. Either way I truly enjoyed having Tracy P. Light as an instructor! She was a delight to talk to and made our classes as interesting/enjoyable as possible… PLUS she fed our class a feast on the last day of the course, so that was pretty awesome. Her Intro to Canadian History course has given me the urge to explore other history courses. Assuming I receive all 3 credits for this course, I only have 6 more credits (2 courses) I have to take to have the appropriate amount of credits in history for my BFA. I am already thinking of what history courses to take to earn these credits, and may I say I’m a little more than excited to take them!

Thanks, Tracy!
